The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest their patients in the care of the human frame, in proper diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease. – Thomas A. Edison, 1902

Health psychology, sometimes referred to as behavioral medicine, is traditionally viewed as a specialty area that focuses on understanding how individuals react, cope, and live with illness. At MindBodyHealth, we believe that Health psychology practice entails much more. We believe in the power of helping you with preventative care in focusing a life maintaining health and wellness. We understand that acute health changes lead to emotional, mental, and behavioral changes. Our focus is aiding in the adjustment process so that you can live the life of your choosing,  in line with meaning and value.

Health psychology certainly does not imply that your medical condition is “all in your head.” Quite the contrary. Rather, health psychology addresses the complexity and integration of factors that connect your physical and mental health. This approach helps examine how a variety of factors, such as heredity, behavioral and lifestyle choices, perception, thoughts, emotions, self-care, and social connections influence your mental and physical health, including your overall well being. This involves not just thinking about managing disease, but also with preventing illness in the first place. Health is more than the absence of disease.

There are a great number of health related concerns that benefit in working with a health psychology model (certainly too many to name here). Several areas of focus include:

  • Pain
  • Stress
  • Cancer
  • HIV/Aids
  • Smoking Cessation
  • Diabetes
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Obesity
  • Hypertension
  • Fatigue
